English Pointer - Jasper - Large - Adult - Male - Dog
Running for his life, starved and a rack of bones; Jasper was found on a rural country road out in the middle of nowhere. The time frame was last August and the area is well known as a place where bird dog trainers work their pups before season opens the first of September. Jasper was sporting a tattoo in his ear which is tough to trace but does show he came from a breeding facility of some sort. We figured that a hunter must have lost him so we began our search for his owner in earnest. Advertised Jasper through all media outlets and social networks but no response. Now the thought began to take shape that perhaps Jasper was "dumped" because he was what ... not working out as a hunting dog? So, just drive off and leave him to his own vices? As in the majority of these cases, we will never know so we enfolded this poor boy into our loving foster home and thus began the "Journey of Jasper". Top priority was packing some major groceries on his emaciated frame and that is not easy to do on a dog who is pretty much in constant motion. Judging by Jasper's actions in the foster home, we knew that he probably had been a kennel dog his whole young life - he new NOTHING about what it meant to live in a home and to act as a beloved pet. Surfing counters, eliminating in the house and humping every dog he laid eyes on ... let's just say that Jasper tried the patience of ALL in the foster home at first, both canine and human. Not only was this boy not trained but when the foster home did try to teach him new rules and boundaries, Jasper would look at them with an expression that can only be described as "DUH?" We realized then and there that we had our work cut out for us if Jasper was going to be an acceptable adoptable dog. HUGE props to our foster parents whom over the course of 6 months have worked wonders with this boy and we do feel Jasper is now ready for a home to call his own.
Jasper is probably one of the most loving, snuggly, happy go lucky fellas you ever want to meet! He has a fabulous temperament and is a joy to be around ... a goofy clown who makes his foster home laugh on a daily basis. Super energetic ... wants to play all of the time and acts more like a 6 month old pup than a 1-1/2 year old dog. Super with all dogs but will hump new dogs he meets at first ... this just seems to be his way of saying "HI" - Jasper does not have a dominant bone in his body so we do not believe that is the issue. If a dog snaps at him, he backs off immediately and will not try it again. Adores having a young canine friend who will run and play with him. Most dogs of Jasper's breeding do not do well with cats but we are so very happy to report that he is wonderful with the cats of the house - just ignores them. Jasper follows his foster dad where ever he goes and is always looking for a scritch behind the ear. Has a good recall and foster dad is working with him on some hunting commands. Speaking of hunting, let us touch on that ... Jasper points everything! Rabbits, the goat, leaves, birds ... if it moves, he points! He seems to have all of the instinctual basics of his breed and, with the right owner and training, believe he could be a great hunting dog.
Jasper is now house broke, crate trained, neutered, up to date on shots, wormed and microchipped. What we need to say about this boy (and we truly say this with all of the love in our hearts) is Jasper is not the "sharpest tack" in the box. Sorry, you just can't sugar coat that. If you are looking for a dog who is highly intelligent who is going to second guess your every move before you do it ...well ... then Jasper may not be the boy for you. However, if you want a dog who enjoys the simple things in life, will worship the ground you walk on, make you laugh with his happy antics and cuddle on your lap ... than we would love for you to consider Jasper.
